How do you change the font size in the chat box in world?

Use the T or T at the top of the chat box (third and fourth icon from the left). The first one makes the text larger, the second makes it smaller.

(and the one that mother gives you, doesn't do much at all...)

As Cougar said, in the chat window itself you can use the T or t to make your fonts larger. You can also go to tools (Cog/Wrench - 2nd from left side down) around your AVI circle in the top right corner in world. Then go to "Interface" and at the bottom Font Style and Size. Sometimes you may want to change the Font Style rather then the Font Size itself.
