If you are running on an older system, you can significantly reduce the amount of memory used by reducing the texture quality in the "Options" screen. There are really two components to RLC,  the engine and the content. The engine part only takes up 4 meg of memory, its the content that eats it up. Our avatars look great, but every outfit, tatoo, piercing, comes at the cost of more memory.

Street with High Rez Textures = 123 Mb - with no other avatars
Street with Low Rez Textures = 80 Mb - with no other avatars

The most important aspect of this, is for older system with low video card memory, using the Low setting with significantly improve performance. We are planning on doing more with the options screen to improve performance on older systems.

While RLC will run on PCs with 256 Mb of system memory, remember that the Windows OS by its self uses up 200 Mb.

I dunno, using .wav's as the in-game  sounds/music is probably one of the biggest issues. I get lots less crashes when I disable all sounds, but that makes the game pretty much suck. Anyhow, ogg or mp3 would be a far less memory intensive task, although a bit more cpu intensive. I'm a c++ developer with many years of experience , I'm not just guessing here. Just my 2 cents.

It really annoys me that I need to raise my VM. I have 1GB of memory and a nice video card. But I guess that's what I get for playing with beta software. Dunno if I should have payed VIP tho.

p.s. if the dev's are worried about mp3 issues, look into ogg, its free....

Read this site, it may help greatly, its in english or german
