Does anyone know if there are any .obj 3d files available for actual props.

I use the obj files for the avatars to create clothing and would find it much easier to map props if there was 3d files available for them as well lol

I don't have any OBJ files on the site. Utherverse uses the Granny system which is GR2 files for props.

The Wraith's prop maps are awesome, especially the overlays. I love them. Wraith you're the bomb!

Thank you but I am not looking for those prop maps ... I use wraiths site for those maps already however I was hoping that there might have been some OBJ style 3D files because working on the types of custom props that I make would be much easier if I can view and edit in 3D instead of 2D.

Kinky..

The prop maps are what you use as a guide to lay your textures so they align with the prop once the textured prop map is applied.

The overlay is like a "shadow" version of the prop map. Once you have your map done (all textures applied), place the overlay on top. It will apply the shadowing for you so looks much better.

Not all prop maps have an overlay available.

I hope this helps.. Hugs..BB

Easiest way for me to answer that is to quote an older post I made. I'm just lazy and don't want to retype it. lol

A prop is made up of two parts. The skeleton and a skin. The skeleton is what gives the prop it's shape. The skin is what gives it the texture and color. A prop map is a 2D representation of the skin.

As an example here is the Antique Dresser in game.

The prop map for it looks like this.

If you wanted to edit it you would put the prop map in an editor of your choice. Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, Gimp and Paint.net are the most popular ones. Once in the editor you find the areas you want to change and paint the color or texture in that you want to use. For that you would really need to use one to get the hang of it. I've been using Paint Shop Pro for close to ten years now. Would be hard to explain the ins and outs of how it works in a forum post. But it shouldn't take you long to learn the basics of any of them.

If you've looked on my site you will see that I have made overlays for a lot of the props. An overlay is a semi transparent grey scale map that you can place over an edited prop map to add the shading back to a prop.

Here is an example of an overlay applied to a flame texture i had laying around.
In the screen shot you can see the original prop map in the lower left corner. Above that is the overlay. In the center is the texture I applied the overlay to. And then the combined image on the right.

A mesh map is another version of a prop map. But shows a wireframe version of the prop map. It shows a little more of where the prop fits in the map.

Here is the barbeque prop map.

And the barbecue mesh map.

In the prop map it's hard to tell where one section of the prop stops and another section starts. With the mesh map you can see each piece.

I hope this gives you a better idea of how they work. If there's something else just let me know and I or somebody else will try and answer your questions.

Regrettably one cannot upload any props to the RLC client. Nor to I expect that option to ever become available.

The Oasis site does support the upload of .OBJ type files but at present only a few have that access and the texture or "map" must be added to it at the time of upload, there is no process in place to allow the editing of a texture mapped to an object once it is uploaded.

There is a wonderful advantage to be able to upload props of your own making, however at present all the tools that would make it a truly grand experiment are not yet in place.

One hopes.

I am not looking to be able to upload props of my own making into the prop editor ... I just want to be able to use the 3D files while texturing maps in photoshop so that I don't have to upload maps over and over again to see what the prop looks like ...

presently with only 2D mapping textures you have to upload the texture map numerous times in order to get some things to line up correctly whereas with 3D files I could do the work in photoshop and actually see the finished prop with the texture on it and make the adjustments needed to align pieces of my texture map correctly

Regarding overlay's shadows on prop maps.

Btw Thanks Wraith for a great web site.

Just Food for thought but is it necessary to use shadow overlays on mapped props, when directional lighting produces the same dark light effect on the prop.
Ok they are totally needed for more realism, if only ambient lighting or the natural template lighting is only used.

Thoughts on this ?

Peace to all Smile

The overlays give props a depth that lighting can't do. Creases in couch cushions or folds in any type of cloth. Think of how some of the curtain props would look like if it was just a flat texture. Also on a lot of props there is shading added where different pieces come together on the prop that lighting doesn't effect.
