I might understand you wrong, or you have understood something wrong
But, you say "I could go to my home site". If you mean with that, to your profile, that is not how it works. When inworld, you click on the Friends button. In the screen that opens, you click on the Friends tab, look for your friend, then right click on their name. Then a menu opens and one of the options is Go There. Click that one and you will be beamed to the region they are in. Except when it says Private, then it will not work. I think you get the idea why
And indeed, this works only for VIPs
