Going from a failing and very tired memory here Mrs_D, but try this.
Gimp -> Filters > Distorts > Newspriint
Change the
Screen to
Intensity.
Drag the
Input SPI out to around
950 or so. That should make the Output SPI in the 315 range.
Cell Size will go as low as
3.
In the Luminance area make sure
Round is selected and drag the angle down to around
-35. (Yes that's a Minus 35.)
Crank the
Oversample all the way up. Seriously up. You can go all the way to 15 most likely.
Play with it around those settings and you should get pretty close to the Half-Tone Mal used in Photoshop.
