I finished this book the other day and as it is Remembrance Day I thought it would be an apt time to
create a post as to how wonderous this book was to read. Heather Morris wrote this work based on her
interviews with Lale himself. A remarkable work that holds nothing back
and shows the true indomitable spirit of a man that believed with his whole heart that love matters
more than hate. Faced with what would seem to be insurmountable odds he meets his future wife in the
concentration camp and falls in love.
This was an 'easy' read in that I read it in the space of 24 hours but read isn't the correct word.
I devoured this book and read straight through all the authors notes and afterwords as well. When I
closed its back cover I re-opened it and read it again more slowly and let each word and phrase really
roll through my brain and connect in my mind. I spent a lot of time closing the book to let the
words really sink into me. To truly know what I was reading.
Although this is a 'Holocaust Book' it is also the love story of Lale and Gita.
This book will make you think. It will make you feel. It will make you grateful for what you have
today.
“Lale tries not to look up. He reaches out to take the piece of paper being handed to him. He must transfer the five digits onto the girl who holds it. There is already a number there but it has faded. He pushes the needle” ― Heather Morris, The Tattooist of Auschwitz
“when you spend years not knowing if in five minutes’ time you will be dead, there is not much that you can’t deal with.” ― Heather Morris, The Tattooist of Auschwitz
“We stand in shit but let us not drown in it.” ― Heather Morris, The Tattooist of Auschwitz
“To save one is to save the world,” ― Heather Morris, The Tattooist of Auschwitz
